Australia’s digital identity system, myGovID, will undergo a significant change in November 2024. It will be officially renamed to myID! This change reduces confusion between myGovID and myGov, making it easier for users to navigate digital government services.
How are myGovID and myGov Different?
While the names sound very similar, myGovID and myGov portals have very different uses.
- myGovID (soon to be myID) is a digital identity verification tool. It’s an authentication app for users to log in to and access government websites in Australia.
- Whereas, through myGov users can access tax records, health data, payments and more.
Why is myGovID being renamed to myID?
One question that pops into our mind is: Why this sudden change? This update is part of an initiative to clear up common misunderstandings. Many users have previously confused myGov, the service that links to government accounts, with myGovID, the digital identity authenticator used to access accounts.
By renaming myGovID to myID, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) aims to make it easier for users to distinguish between these two services. While the name changes, the functionality remains the same, just under a new name.
What does this change mean for users?
For users of the myGovID system, there’s no need to worry.
- No Action Required: If you’re already using myGovID, you won’t need to re-register or make any changes. The update will happen automatically in November 2024.
- Same Security, New Name: Your data remains safe with myID, adhering to the same security standards and practices as my GovID.
As the ATO prepares to roll out the changes and officially rename the service, accounting firms should advise their clients to be extra vigilant and watch out for scammers who exploit the confusion between myGovID and myGov. Keep an eye on official ATO website for more updates!
